Under the Roof Tiles is an immersive, non-linear narrative reading experience based on my thesis, Under the Roof Tiles - The shape of memory; it is an extension of the book Grandma Museum and an interpretation of my abstract feelings of memory. I unpacked my auto-ethnography and showed it in an exhibition.

Memory
A reel of film,
With sounds that are unsynchronised,
Each recollection matches up with different dialogues.

Welcome to my memory space,
Where you can roam free,
Through fragments of time and place,
And the stories that define me.

Take a seat in a corner and rest yourself,
Immerse yourself in my memories,
Linking your own to mine with ease,
Journey through your stories.

In a small dark room, I place white furniture with 3 animations projected onto it. (Orange Tree, Window Scenery, Dining Table) I intend to create an abstract living room. The audience can freely roam in the room and view three of my memory clips that are projected on different installations. The memory clips were selected from the chapters in Grandma Museum and visualised from text to motion.

The animations are played discontinuously with unsynchronised sound, representing my interpretation of recalling memory based on my own experience at my grandparents' old house. The memory appeared spontaneously and unexpectedly as I got close to an object.
Memory Box shows the essence of my exhibition – recalling memory.

I place Memory Box in the corner, encouraging people to create their own memory images. With the contour, the shapes, and the colours of the objects, everyone can interpret in their own unique way based on their culture and memory. Because I believe that even though we are from different cultural backgrounds, we share a commonality in humanity.
The last, the audience can sit on the floor and read Grandma Museum and my thesis in a corner with pillows, while viewing three animations. This is a reshaping of the room for grandsons at my grandparents’ where we used to sit on the wood-paved floor with our duvets and pillows.
Under The Roof Tiles is a space for evocation. My intention is to use visual communication to create an immersive room that elicits emotions towards the everyday objects around us. The shapes and stories within the room are a part of my life. However, through visual communication design, they have transformed into a common language for everyone. I aim to convey my own experience during my life journey so far and invite people to generate and interpret the room based on their life experience and cultural context. The essence of the space is not only about myself but also the audience themselves. I place myself as a medium, nudging people closer to their awareness of cultural heritage.
